Empowering Women in Mauritania
MIDDLE EAST NORTH AFRICA | PROJECT UPDATE

Your partnership in Mauritania is empowering women to transform their lives and communities through economic independence and practical skills. This year, 33 women who are heads of households launched thriving small businesses, including a laundry service to meet neighborhood needs, a couscous-milling venture that provides a staple food, and dyeing and trading of traditional malhafas. These enterprises not only generate income for families but also build confidence, connection, and leadership among the women. In addition, 30 women benefited from literacy classes in a village that had a 100% illiteracy rate.

Success is marked by milestones these women once thought impossible. By reinvesting one-third of their earnings while also supporting their families, they were able to purchase their own millet-grinding machine—a major breakthrough that doubled their production. "We are grateful to the donors for the spark," Jamilata shares, "and we are proud that our own savings bought the tools for our growth." Increased efficiency has also opened the door for three more women to join the work, expanding this circle of empowerment. Thanks to your support, women in Mauritania are reclaiming dignity, opportunity, and the tools to create lasting change for themselves and their communities.
