Jim Sundholm Compassion Fund

The Jim Sundholm Compassion Fund for Love Mercy Do Justice invests in compassion, mercy, and justice ministries for the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Jim Sundholm Compassion Fund
LOVE MERCY DO JUSTICE

Rev. Jim Sundholm (1945-2020) zealously lived out God’s call to serve marginalized people. “He deeply loved and cared for the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed. He refused to keep quiet about injustice,” said David Husby, former director of Covenant World Relief and Development. “He opened my eyes to the deep brokenness of the world and demonstrated through his life how to love people the way Jesus loves them.”

Family and friends of Jim desire to honor his life by establishing a fund to support ministry that embodies his pastoral legacy of compassion and service to people at the margins. The Jim Sundholm Compassion Fund has been created to highlight the compassion, mercy, and justice ministries of the Evangelical Covenant Church. We invite you to join in support of this fund.

The Covenant seeks to join God in making things right in our broken world through Love Mercy Do Justice. Gifts to the Sundholm Fund will be directed to biblical justice ministries across our movement. Ministry Development Grants is one such ministry where the need has never been greater. For every 10 churches receiving a grant, there are 20 churches who do not. Support to the Sundholm Fund helps afford greater kingdom impact equipping the local church in its call to love, serve, and work together with people at the margins for holistic transformation.

Gifts to the Jim Sundholm Compassion Fund for Love Mercy Do Justice will directly support such ministry needs as:

  • CRIMINAL JUSTICE—Equipping, connecting, and empowering congregations to be the hands and feet of Christ amid the complexities of the criminal justice system.
  • MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT—Guidance and financial support for congregations or organizations imagining creative approaches to transformational community development work and impactful ministry initiatives.
  • RACIAL RIGHTEOUSNESS—Immersive discipleship experiences, and learning opportunities help churches understand the biblical and theological basis for racial righteousness and reconciliation, to love neighbors, and to shine as the light of Christ in the community.
  • ADVOCACY FOR VICTIMS OF ABUSE (AVA)—Sexual assault and domestic violence are addressed through AVA, acknowledging the power of community to heal through Jesus Christ.
  • INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT—Training, coaching, leadership development, assessments, curriculum, and practical tools help move churches along in their intercultural competency and development.
  • DISASTER RESPONSE—Working through local and global partners to reduce human suffering in times of disaster.
  • THE FREE INITIATIVE—Anti-sex trafficking efforts of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

A focal point of the fund is to assist people, groups, churches, or camps offering compassion ministry in critical moments. It provides an opportunity to request funding for immediate needs that require resources beyond what the local church can do on its own.
